Along the Via Claudia Augusta way through Vinschgau Valley
The first Stage of the Via Claudia Augusta brings you to Vinschgau Valley in South Tyrol. The "King Ortler"-mountain is in the south and high glaciers in the north form the enchant scenery of the Vinschgau Valley. Discover the valley with the mountain bike.
Reschen
After you have cross the frontier you arrive in Reschen. This place,
years ago, has been overflowed for building a dam reservoir. Today you
can see there only a very picturesque spire, which rises in the middle
of the sea: a great panorama to take a photo.
Mals
The Via Claudia Augusta goes ahead to Mals, the capital of Western
Vinschgau Valley. Mals, in the epoche of the ancient romans, was an
important stage of the way. The city attracts with its medieval
character. Don’t miss the Saint Michaels church with frescos from the
16th century or the Saint Benedikt church, wich was built in 9th
century.
Glurns
The bike-excursion continues and after a few kilometres you will arrive
in Glurns, the smallest and one of the oldest cities of Italy. Glurns
is worth seeing: there are many tighty archs and big city walls. Glurns
takes you on a time journey: You will fall in love with this romantic
place.
Schluderns
Visit Schluderns. It is a fascinating example of South Tyrolean
architecture and there is a enchant castle, too, the Churburg castle.
There you can see the biggest armament collection of Europe. Don’t miss
the Saint Katherine’s church: the statues there were made with
skeleton, which the church-builders find in roman catacombs in medieval
times. Ghoulish but fascinating.
Kastelbell-Tschars
The Churburg castle is not the only castle in Vinschgau Valley. You
will pass many medieval buildings on your way through the marvellous
valley. Like the Kastelbell Castle where you can watch an exhibition,
which is dedicated to Via Claudia Augusta. After a few chilometers you
will arrive to Juval castle near Naturns. The castle belongs to
Reinhold Messner, a famous alpinist, who exhibits there his collection
of cultural assets from Tibet.
After you have visited the castles and the lovely cities of Vinschgau
Valley the
Via Claudia Augusta continues in the region of
